Neural Mechanisms Underlying Muscle Synergies Involved in the Control of the Human Hand

چکیده
The dexterity of the human hand depends largely on the ability to move the fingers independently, the execution of which requires the coordination of multiple muscles. How these muscle ensembles are recruited by the central nervous system is not clear. Therefore, the objective of this dissertation was to identify some of the neural mechanisms whereby certain hand muscles are recruited into functional groups, or muscle synergies, needed for the generation of specific hand and finger movements. We characterized the organization of synaptic inputs onto the motor neurons supplying different compartments of a multi-tendoned finger flexor, the flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS). We found that the motor neurons controlling different finger compartments of the FDS do not receive entirely segregated inputs, and that the motor neurons supplying adjacent compartments receive substantially more common synaptic input than motor neurons supplying compartments further apart. The FDS and another multi-tendoned finger flexor, the flexor digitorum profundus (FDP), both insert onto each finger and function together to flex the fingers. Surprisingly, we found that the motor neurons controlling the compartments of FDS and FDP to the same finger receive completely independent inputs, despite similar mechanical functions of the two muscles. Thus, there is more neural coupling between motor neurons supplying compartments of the same muscle that move different fingers than there is between motor neurons supplying the compartments of two different muscles that move the same finger. Although the motor neurons supplying the flexors of the tips of the thumb [flexor pollicis longus (FPL)] and index finger [index compartment of the flexor digitorum

Neuroplasticity and neuromotor synergies in context of rehabilitation after stroke: a systematic review
Background: Alterations of neuroplasticity and cortical excitability are important pathophysiological factors in stroke. Modulation of the neuroplasticity has been proposed as an underlying mechanism of recovery in different neurological disorders. But it is not still clear how the CNS faces the complexity of muscle control. Neuroplastic processes may be used for the functional improvement of s...
متن کاملInvestigation of Muscle Synergies Using Four Different Methods of Synergy Extraction While Running on a Treadmill in Beginner Runners
Introduction: The study of muscle synergy is a new way to evaluate the functioning of the human body's control system. Different mathematical methods are used to extract muscle synergies from electromyographic data, and this factor can cause different outputs in muscle synergies. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate muscle synergies using four different synergy extraction methods...

First published June 20, 2012; doi:10.1152/jn.01112.2011.—There has been extensive debate as to whether muscle synergies in motor tasks reflect underlying neural organization or simply correlations in muscle activity that are imposed by the task. On...
متن کاملNeural bases of hand synergies
The human hand has so many degrees of freedom that it may seem impossible to control. A potential solution to this problem is "synergy control" which combines dimensionality reduction with great flexibility. With applicability to a wide range of tasks, this has become a very popular concept. In this review, we describe the evolution of the modern concept using studies of kinematic and force syn...
متن کاملMuscle synergies characterizing human postural responses.
Postural control is a natural behavior that requires the spatial and temporal coordination of multiple muscles. Complex muscle activation patterns characterizing postural responses suggest the need for independent muscle control. However, our previous work shows that postural responses in cats can be robustly reproduced by the activation of a few muscle synergies. We now investigate whether a s...
